Biennial foxglove seeds germinate in the first year, forming a basal rosette of leaves. In the second year, they produce 3-4 foot tall stalks with white, bell-shaped flowers with deep maroon throats. The flowers open sequentially from bottom to top, lasting several weeks. The plants require semi-shady conditions and moist, fertile soil (pH 5.5-6.5) and are hardy to USDA zone 4. Pruning the stalks promptly after flowering promotes secondary blooms. The seeds can be collected and sown when mature. Their upright stalks make a great backdrop for borders or complement blue flowers for a cool contrast. Germination occurs 21-28 days after sowing, requiring a thin layer of soil and a temperature of 15-20°C. This variety is deer-resistant and suitable for naturalistic gardens or woodland edges.
